From Goodreads.com:  Will a courtship ruse

…lead to complete ruination?

A Spinster Sisterhood story. Roguish gentleman Jameson Russell is given an ultimatum by his marry or be cut off. He hatches a foolproof plan—find a lady so entirely unsuitable to court that his brother will beg him to stay a bachelor!

Society has shunned Charity Beaumont since her broken engagement and her sister’s shameful elopement. So she accepts Jameson’s scandalous offer as a means of freedom from London’s scathing gossipmongers—on one Jameson will not touch her. But that’s the trouble with a fake courtship. Even the strictest rules can’t tame blazing desires…

My Rating: 3 stars out of 5

This is one of those books that will undoubtedly appeal to a wide range of readers, however it just wasn't a hit for me personally.

A large part of this is due to the fact that it's basically a carbon copy of every other book in this genre I've read that deals with fake courtships. Its so obvious a blind man could see that these two not only have genuine feelings for each other, but would be perfect for one another yet she refuses to ask him for what he's told her he can't give, and he's too bloody pig-headed to get out of his own way. And look, I appreciate some drama in a story, some tension between my characters, but it gets tedious as a reader when they are constantly talking about how much they care for the other person, but can't be with them for *insert stupid reason here*. In this instance, it's because Jameson has a very low opinion on himself based on things his farther and elder brother have said to him in the past. He lives on an allowance that his brother is threatening to revoke due to his gambling. But even after realizing how much he cares for Charity, he still won't man up and do anything that might bring in the income needed to support a wife (at least until she comes into her inheritance in five years). And of course, his brother still isn't satisfied and is still threatening to cut him off because he doesn't find Charity to be acceptable due to circumstances that were beyond her control (a scandal caused by her sister years prior). One would think that when his brother saw how serious Jameson was about Charity, he would reconsider, but alas, instead he has to dance with her and unleash his venomous words on her as well.

And of course, as with the other books in this genre, there is suddenly a miraculous fix to his financial situation (which wouldn't have been all that miraculous if he had actually put himself out there instead of feeling like he was doomed to fail from the start based on how his talent was viewed when he was a child).

Now that isn't to say that there wasn't some genuinely adorable moments between the pair. Or some moments between Charity and her friends Olive and Nora that I didn't find enjoyable. There were. And I did enjoy this one just enough that I would read more as I'm wondering if her friends will find their happily-ever-after with the people I think they will or not. I just hope those books have more that makes them stand out against all of the others in the genre.
