Review: The Unexpected Gift by Madeline Hunter (part of A Yuletide Kiss anthology)

Print Length: 336 total pages
Publisher: Kensington Books (September 28, 2021)

From  Jenna Waverly has closed her inn, anticipating a blissfully quiet Christmas, until a snowstorm brings the first of several strangers to her property. Lucas Avonwood, as charming as he is secretive, is on a mission to track down a scoundrel, but the inn’s lovely owner is giving him a more compelling reason to stay...

My Rating: 3 stars out of 5

The second novella in the A Yuletide Kiss anthology was a cute read, even if I did prefer the moments when Jenna tended to Lucas to the moments when they joined the rest of the guests (mainly because when they were with the others it felt like a re-telling of scenes I had already read in the first novella, just from the point of view of Jenna and/or Lucas).

I felt like those moments that were just them allowed us the opportunity to experience their connection while also getting to know parts of them that they kept hidden from the others. I also agree with the author's thoughts that it gave their relationship an intimate feel long before they were physically intimate with one another.

The only other complaint that I have with this one was that the ending, while going exactly as I had anticipated as far as the one side-story, felt very rushed and all too easily wrapped up. I wanted more drama there, and more of a confrontation between Jenna, her brother, and Lucas.

I hope to see more of these characters in a full-length novel sometime in the future as I am curious as to not only Jenna's future with Lucas, but how her brother does when he takes over the inn. I would definitely read more from this author!
