Review: The Dark Ones by Rachel van Dyken

Print Length: 268 pages
Publisher: Create Space (September 20, 2015)

From Goodreads.com: To touch a Dark One is death.
To talk to an immortal is suicide.
Yet, I've been marked by both.
A Vampire.
And the King of the immortals.
My life is no longer my own.
And now I know the truth, my life was never mine to begin with.
It was theirs.
It's always been theirs.

My Rating: 5 stars out of 5

I could start off by saying that this book was AMAZING... but then it IS a Rachel van Dyken book, and I say that about a lot of her books.

So I guess I will simply start off by saying that this is one of the best paranormal romance novels that I have ever read.

The Dark Ones is one of those novels where you are immediately gripped by the hand and tossed into a world where nothing is as you believed it to be. A world where vampires, werewolves, sirens and angels not only exist, but the human race knows about them, and are in fact crucial to the continuation of these species - and not as a food source.

For poor Genesis, this has consequences that even she can't imagine. Raised all of her life to believe that she is ugly and worthless, when her number is called, she meets with the Immortal Elders believing her job will be to teach their offspring the ways of the "human" world. However, within moments of meeting Cassius (the Dark one and sort of leader of all the Elders), she is claimed by Ethan and whisked away to a secluded mansion where it is explained to her that Cassius has marked her for his own, and the only way to save her is to allow herself to be "bonded" with Ethan. Even more unfortunate for Genesis, Ethan doesn't even really want to take her for his mate as his own mate betrayed him once upon a time and he is unwilling to go through that again.

In another twist of events, it is also explained to her that she may not even make it through the process of being bonded as his mate, and even if she does there is no guarantee how long she will survive as the mates of these Immortals have been dying off ever since the ultimate act of betrayal was committed.

Filled with intrigue, suspense and surprising revelations around every corner The Dark Ones will leave you on the edge of your seat!
